New Story HD. Help!

Okay, I just got a brand-spanking new Story HD from buy.com. I was playing around with it earlier and it was functioning fine. It shipped with a dead battery and was running firmware 1.00. I connected it to WiFi after the battery was fully charged and the device updated to firmware 1.32 (via the wifi updater), the most currently released firmware. The device downloaded some 10 files and then the 1.32 update (which was very bizarre in size; somewhere around 400KB) afterwards. Right now, I am experiencing some... Issues.
  • The device freezes whenever I insert my SD card (even my empty one).
  • For some insight, I have a 4GB "Gigaware" 2 Class SDHC here from radio shack. I just formated the card and everything, yet it still isn't working.
  • Whenever I reset the device by holding the off/on slider, it does reset the device, but the blasted thing changes the time and date as well.
  • When I read a book and hit the "Back" key, the device freezes for a second and then takes me all the way to the home screen. Oddly enough, the cursor keeps going to the "Sign Into Google Ebooks thing".
  • EDIT: Now when I hop out of a book, it freezes. It keeps saying I was last reading the "Story HD User Guide"
  • EDIT 2: The collins english dictionary is now freezing upon word search.
  • I have disabled the wifi after my updates as well.

Also, Here is a screen of the root directory and system folder. Perhaps something is missing, or a file that is there shouldn't be...?




*Note: all the files in the "System" folder say they were last modified in 2011.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Was it something I did that could have busted it? Can I fix this by downgrading to 1.29 or something (if so, how)?

Please, if anyone knows or has some suggestions, it is extremely appreciated. I just got this device for my birthday, and it would kill me if I had to ask my parents to send it back. :blink:

I was looking at at picture of the iriver story It looks like it has page turn buttons on the sides. I could not tell from the picture is this is the case. Does anyone know if it does has buttons?

This was the story not the cover story oro the story hd

Story HD Mod: Service Menu

Hi,

Warning: This mod works fine for me, but I can't guarantee it will work for you. Use at your own risk!

This mod adds a Service Menu to your Story HD, using built-in webbrowser. This mod requires the WebPortal to be installed also, as otherwise the webbrowser can not be used. Unfortunately, this also means that you have to have Wifi network access in order to access the service menu.

Currently the Service Menu supports the following operations:
  • Check internal and external (SDCARD) memory for read errors
  • Format internal (FAT32 partition) and external (SDCARD) memory
  • Delete book database
  • Reboot

Please note that this mod is particularly dangerous as it allows you to format, thereby intentionally losing data. Make sure you have a backup of all files first!

To use, rename the attached hex file to storyeb07.hex and copy it to the internal memory (like a regular firmware update). It can also be uninstalled using the attached undo file.

You will also have to edit your webportal.html to include a link to the notes app. Insert the following HTML code into your webportal.html so you can actually select it in the portal:

Story HD Mod: Hyphenation

Hi,

Warning: This mod works fine for me, but I can't guarantee it will work for you. Use at your own risk!

this is a replacement for my old Hyphenation Disabler mod.

Instead of disabling au-to-ma-tic hy-phe-na-tion of words, it moves the hyphen dictionaries to the internal memory, so you can choose whether you want to disable hyphenation altogether (by deleting / renaming the hyphen files), or if you instead want to modify/improve the file, or replace them with files from other readers or projects.

To use, rename the attached hex file to storyeb07.hex and copy it to the internal memory (like a regular firmware update).

This change can also be reverted by using the attached Undo file, which will also delete the hyphen folder in internal memory.

Problem charging battery

Hello,
when I plug the reader to charge the battery in the battery icon in the reader appears a little thunderbold, saying that the battery is being charged. But I've noticed that this icon never disappears when the battery is full charged. I have left the reader plugged for more than 12 hours and the icon shows that battery is still charging. Is this an issue? The icon should change to show that battery is full charged?

Is there a way to change the margin on all epubs?

Hi,

I really like my iriver story HD for reading - because the words are so much more crisp than with 800x600.

One thing that does cause a problem is that some epubs have the left and right margins set too large. When I enlarge the font - to save my eyes - the margins becomes huge.

Is there a way to globally change the margins so it will ignore the margins specified in the ebook. I noticed that mobi on Kindle can set hte margins, and I think CR also can use its own margin with epubs.

I really want an iriver story HD. The dictionary is the only thing keeps me from buying one. Do I need to type the whole word to find the definition? Can I highlight a word to get the definition?

Now the battery is getting worse, lifetime is decreasing,

Does anybody know:

battery type?

were to buy? (germany)

hints for replacement?

iriver Story startup

hello, got home and tried my newly acquired iriver Story, the original from 2009. It's not second hand.

Shows nothing on screen, which BTW looks intact. Plug it to the PC: shows nothing, no message, no LED light, no USB connection on PC, nothing. Tried with a different cable too.

Is it expected for a first charge? Or may I assume it's dead and contact support?

*edit*
forget it: after about 10 minutes of charging, just the time to come here and whine a bit, it showed the opening menu. It's now working very fine.

Tip: Use Bookmark List to simulate a "Currently Reading" list

I have lots of books on my Story HD, maybe 2000, and I'm reading several of them at any given time. It's nice that it remembers my place in all of them, but a single "Currently Reading" is not enough for me.

When you enter the Option Menu from the Folder View, one of the options is Bookmark List. This pulls up a list of all books you've got bookmarks set for. Because it saves my place, I've rarely used bookmarks, and it occurred to me today that I could use this to keep track of my full "Currently Reading" list. Just set a bookmark in each book you want to track. You can choose between updating the bookmark each time so you can get there through the Bookmark List, or just using the list to remember your books, navigating to them the normal way.

I haven't really tried this yet, but I'm looking forward to it. I just wanted to put the idea out there.

iRiver Story HD firmware issue?

Hi everyone,

I used to buy ebooks from BooksOnBoard.com but they are not trading any more, so I bought an ebook from ebooks.com recently. However, I can't open it - I have DRM issues: error message says:

"E_ADEPT_CORE_USER_NOT_ACTIVATED
A different Adobe ID has been authorized for use on this device."

I also can no longer open the ebooks I bought from the previous site, nor can I open ebooks from my local library. I was using an old P4 machine running Windows XP before, and now have a new computer running Windows 7, but don't think that is an issue(?)... *unless* running Adobe Digital Editions 2.0 now, instead of 1.5 (approx) makes any difference?

I've had wonderful help from the good folks at ebooks.com and I can't ask any more of them, when the problem surely resides on my Story HD. I connect to my PC using USB3 port - I do not have Wi-fi. I've asked iRiver Support for help, but the email address is in Korea and the lady there has somewhat difficult English, and this coupled with my incomplete understanding of these DRM issues makes it hard for me to know what to do.

I *think* she's telling me to go back to using "Basic" 1.28 version firmware instead of the 1.33 version I have.

I thought I DID have 1.28 but a friend must have upgraded it from my previous version to 1.33 instead of just to 1.28 I'd saved to Flash drive. He said he'd do it, because you apparently can "brick" a device, if you stuff up a firmware update. But on the iRiver site, at least for me, I can't download 1.28 (or 1.27) anyway; I get error messages which terminate the download partway through.

Even when I can (somehow) get hold of 1.28, I don't understand the instructions on the iRiver site about how to use the .hex file which is spawned from the downloaded .zip file. It says:

1. Connect Story HD with your PC via USB cable
2. Push hex file in Cover story folder.
3. Cut the connection between PC and Story HD by removing USB cable form PC.
4. Firmware update will be proceeded on losing the connection between of them.

Obviously the "Cover story" is an error in (2): *what* folder in the iRiver Story HD should I put the .hex file in before pulling out the USB connection, please? Or is this firmware maybe not the (only) issue?

The kind folks at iRiver's former Australian agent, CR Kennedy, today told me to try reformatting the Story HD (or at least removing the Digital Editions folder on it) to see if that helps - and also do a "hard" factory reset on the Story HD, but none of these steps worked. Anything not DRM-protected, eg a Word or .pdf file, works *fine*, but nothing with DRM protection will open.

Finally - all ebooks open fine on my PC in Adobe Digital Editions, and if I open them on my Story HD while it is connected to the PC as a Removable Disk, they ALSO work fine on Digital Editions. But they will not open when the reader is disconnected from the PC.

Please, any help is greatly appreciated.

How can I find out where the font path of Iriver Cover Story

I'm trying to fix a font problem of a book and my reader is an Iriver Cover Story. Anyone know how to locate the path of it ?

In Windows Explorer, it like " x:\fonts ", how to find out the full path to write in the css style ?

like "..sth\\fonts\" I guess

Iriver server not available for german firmware update

Hi,

Yesterday and today I tried to see if an update for my iriver hd story firmware (I have "version 1.32 DE" at the moment) was available.

However, I am not able to connect to any iriver server. I tried it with different routers and different internet connections. Every time I could connect to the router, and the internet, but it did not find any update server.

Have the iriver update servers been switched off for the german versions?

Hi all!

Haven't been in here for quite a while, probably because I haven't had any problems with my iRiver. It's one of the first models, but it still does what I want which is display epub-style ebooks for me to read.

How is it with everybody else? Still chasing rainbows? ;)

Iriver cover story displaying "Can't open doc."

I have had my Iriver cover story now for just over 3 years. So far it has worked fine and I have have had no problems with transfer or opening of files. Until now.

Today I wanted to try my local library's new ebook lending service powered by Overdrive. I was able to borrow and download the files. I could open them on my laptop with Adobe Digitals Edition (2.0). My device is authorized with my Adobe ID. The files show up in the show up in the laptops downloads folder as a ACSM file but in Adobe it looks like any other epub. Through ADE I'm able to transfer the file onto my iriver but then when I try to open it on the device I get the message "Can't open doc."

This has never happened before. I have googled and read various forums but found nothing to help.

Please help if anyone has had this happened to them and managed to fix it.

Iriver Cover Story is frozen

First of all, hello to you all. It's my first time here.

So ... i've got this big problem with my IRiver Cover Story. It won't reset. I tried the small hole between the USB port and SD Card Slot, but apparently it doesn't have a reset button over there like it should. Next, i've tried pressing POWER + HOME, like the manual said. Surprise, surprise , it didn't work. Third try was with the "BACK" arrow + POWER, and it still doesn't work.

Apparently my IRiver doesn't want to be reseted. Any other ideas ? Please help, im on the edge of my patience here. :)

Iriver Story Hd internal memory problem

Hey guys,
I was reading on my iriver yesterday when suddenly it froze, wouldn't move to any other page. It remained like this for a few hours until I restarted it. After some poking around I found that I had no internal memory left, which is very strange because I didn't have that many books on it. I swiftly deleted all the books (had them backed up on Adobe Digital Editions) to see what I could do. I freed up 7 MB when the iriver has 1380 MB.

Version 1.34 firmware

I ran Disk Utility on it but to no success.

Help would be greatly appreciated, I don't really want to give up reading on it.
